2011 fellows

Dr. Stephanie Connidis

Stephanie Connidis is a hospitalist. She is service chief in the Community Health Unit at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, a position that makes her responsible for promoting quality assurance in the unit's physician group and supporting a collaborative approach to patient-centred care.

About EXTRA: "This has been a very powerful hands-on experience. We have been surrounded by incredibly stimulating expert faculty and - very importantly - by a national group of learners from many health disciplines who are invested in providing good leadership within their administrative and clinical roles in health care."

Dr. Paul Komenda

Paul Komenda is research director at Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg. "I oversee the home hemodialysis program, which trains patients and their support personnel to use hemodialysis machines at home," says Dr. Komenda. "I developed clinical protocols, evaluation metrics and recruitment strategies for the program alongside a dedicated allied health team."

About EXTRA: "I wanted to gain further training in applying research in administrative decisions. As an administrative researcher, it is important to also gain knowledge of how the types of projects I do are used by others. I also wanted to meet other like-minded individuals, and EXTRA provides the perfect opportunity to do that."

Dr. Stavros Savvopoulos

Stavros Savvopoulos is a hospitalist and medical director of hospital care with the Capital District Health Authority's Department of Family Practice. "I carry responsibility for enhancing inpatient family practice clinical services across Capital Health and for ensuring smooth patient flow and coordination across the continuum of care," he says. He also plays an instrumental role in cultivating collaborative working relationships between family physicians and the CDHA.

About EXTRA: "We saw EXTRA as a great opportunity to acquire skills we could quickly apply in our day-to-day work regarding making business decisions based on best evidence. This also helps explain why the CDHA has been such a strong supporter of the EXTRA program."
